Phone number validator

Paste any phone number to see if it is valid, what type of line it is and how to write it correctly. The check follows each country's official numbering plan.

What you get

  • Valid or invalid for the country's numbering plan
  • Line type: mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free, premium
  • Country and calling code
  • E.164, international, national and RFC 3966 formats

Private by design

The check runs in your browser with Google's libphonenumber data. The numbers you enter are not sent to our servers or stored.

What the validator checks

Every country publishes a numbering plan: which number lengths exist, which first digits belong to mobile networks, landlines, toll-free or premium services. The validator compares your number with these rules, using the same metadata as Google’s libphonenumber library, which Android and many CRMs use.

CheckExample
Valid number+44 7400 123456 is in a UK mobile range
Line typemobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free, premium rate, shared cost, pager
Country+1 876 … is Jamaica, not the US
FormatsE.164 +447400123456, international +44 7400 123456, national 07400 123456

Why validate phone numbers?

  • Fewer failed SMS and calls. Invalid numbers cost money with every SMS provider and waste sales calls.
  • Cleaner sign-ups. Fake numbers such as 1234567 or 555-0100 are rejected before they reach your CRM.
  • Consistent data. Storing numbers in E.164 format makes them searchable and ready for any telephony API.

Validating numbers in your own app

The tool is fine for a few numbers. To check numbers in a form, CRM or import job, use the numlookupapi phone validation API: one HTTP request returns validity, line type, carrier, location and all formats as JSON, for 100 free requests a month.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a phone number is valid?

A number is valid when its length and leading digits match a range that is in use in the country's numbering plan. Enter it above with the country code (e.g. +44) or pick the default country, and the validator tells you instantly. It cannot tell whether a valid number is currently switched on or assigned to a person.

Can I check if a phone number is active?

Not with format validation alone. Whether a number is connected requires a live network query (HLR lookup), which only telecom operators and some paid APIs can do. This tool checks that the number exists in the numbering plan, which catches typos and fake numbers.

What is the difference between valid and possible?

A possible number has a length that some numbers in that country have. A valid number also starts with digits that are actually assigned, e.g. a UK mobile must start with 07. Numbers that are possible but not valid usually contain a typo.

Do I need to enter the country code?

No. If the number has no country code, the validator uses the default country you choose. Numbers starting with + or 00 are always read as international numbers.

Can I validate phone numbers in bulk?

Yes, with the bulk phone validator (up to 10,000 numbers in your browser) or with the numlookupapi API from your own software.
