How the formatter works

The formatter parses each line with Google’s libphonenumber metadata, so it knows where area codes end and which trunk prefix to drop in each country. Numbers that cannot be parsed are left empty in the output, so you can spot and fix them. Everything happens in your browser.

Need this in code? The numlookupapi API returns e164_format, international_format and national_format for every number, together with validation, line type and carrier.

Frequently asked questions

What is E.164 format?

E.164 is the international standard for phone numbers: a plus sign, the country code and the subscriber number, without spaces or punctuation, at most 15 digits. Example: +442079460958. Most telephony and SMS APIs (Twilio, Vonage, AWS SNS) expect E.164.

How do I convert a phone number to international format?

Remove the trunk prefix (usually a leading 0), then put + and the country code in front. 020 7946 0958 in the UK becomes +44 20 7946 0958. The formatter does this for you for every country.

Which format should I store in my database?

Store E.164 (+442079460958). It is unique, sortable and works with every telephony API. Format it nationally or internationally only when you display it.

Can I format numbers from different countries in one list?

Yes. Numbers that start with + or 00 are detected automatically. For numbers without a country code, the default country you select is used.
