Frequently asked questions

What is an area code?

In the North American Numbering Plan (country code +1), an area code is the three-digit number in front of the seven-digit local number, e.g. 212 in (212) 555-0123. It shows the region a number was originally assigned to. Mobile numbers keep their area code when people move, so it does not prove where a caller is today.

How many area codes are there in the US?

This list has 359 US area codes with location data and 56 Canadian ones. New area codes are added as regions run out of numbers, usually as overlays that share the same territory.

Which area codes are toll-free?

800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are toll-free codes: the called party pays. They are not tied to a location, so they are not listed here.

Are area codes like 876 or 809 international?

Yes. Jamaica (876, 658), the Dominican Republic (809, 829, 849), the Bahamas (242) and other Caribbean countries use +1 area codes but are separate countries. Calls to them are billed as international calls. They are listed at the bottom of this page.
